Rare ‘ice halo’ seen in the sky over New Mexico as arctic blast continues to sweep across the US… and the chill is expected to last until at least next Thursday

  • Optical phenomenon was seen above the town of Red River prompting Joshua Thomas to take a photo 
  • Rings and arcs in the sky are formed by light interacting with ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere
  • It comes as weather forecasters predict the cold snap will continue into next week and could reach southern Texas
  • Photographer Joshua Nowicki trekked along the icy shore of Lake Michigan on Thursday armed with a camera
  • He captured stunning array of photos of St Joseph Lighthouse and pier, both of which were completely frozen 
  • Record-breaking cold has already killed at least 22 people, with major pile-ups in Michigan and Pennsylvania
  • Severe wind gusts of up to 40mph could make temperatures across New York state feel as low as minus 30F

A rare ‘ice halo’ was seen above New Mexico has as the arctic blast continued to make its way across the country, causing temperatures to plummet below freezing in dozens of cities.

The optical phenomenon was captured by Texan photographer Joshua Thomas above the town of Red River – which has experienced sub-zero temperatures throughout the last few days.

The variety of rings and arcs in the sky are formed by light interacting with ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere during the cold weather.

It comes as weather forecasters predict the cold snap will continue into next week and could even reach parts of southern Texas.

Brisbane hits coldest temperature in 103 years

If you are lucky enough to be reading this from the comfort of your blankets, it might be best to stay there, as Brisbane has hit its coldest temperatures in 103 years.

Not since July 28 1911 has Brisbane felt this cold, getting down to a brisk 2.6C at 6.41am.

At 7am, it inched up to 3.3C.

Matt Bass, meteorologist from BOM, said the region was well below our average temperatures.

A new ice age could be on its way to Europe and some other parts of the Earth following an alarming fall occurred in the performance power of the Sun, scientists have warned.

While the number of gas explosions on the Sun’s surface should be at the peak of its 11-year cycle of activity, but the recent research has indicated an unexpected drop off, researchers say.

Temperatures hit -41 in Swedish cold snap

Residents living in far northern Sweden woke up to a temperature of -41.2 C on Sunday as the harsh winter continues to bite across the rest of the country.

 

The village of Karesuando, right at the very northern tip of Sweden, clocked the epic cold temperature during Sunday reports the Swedish weather agency SMHI. 

“It is also a seasonal record,” said SMHI meteorologist Lars Unnerstad to the TT news agency. The recorded temperature of -41.2 was a record for that region which is right on the Finnish border.

Auch wenn bis Mitte Januar für Deutschland warme Temperaturen angesagt wurden – kann sich so ein Ice Age Winter auch bei uns einstellen…
